Junior Parents Weekend

Ask me where my favorite place on campus is. My response is the third floor of Buckley Center, where I work for a few hours Monday through Friday between my classes. I work for the School of Nursing, and the staff that work there are some of the most caring people I have ever met. They are all pretty funny with great personalities that make work enjoyable. I have worked there since freshman year, but since a lot of new students have been hired lately, we had a lunch meeting to review procedures and check in with everyone. I have attached a group photo from this meeting so you can see some of the faces that I get to see every single day. smiley

In other news, orientation for freshmen and graduation for seniors are two landmark events that bring the families of UP students to campus. Four years apart though? Wouldn't it be GREAT if something existed for juniors and their families. Good news! Junior Parents and Families weekend takes place every February, and this is how I spent my past few days.

Being from Los Angeles, I didn't want my parents and sister to have to fly up when I knew I was going home in just a few weeks for Spring Break. My boyfriend's family, however, lives about 20 minutes away and came to participate in the planned activities. Chris is a senior, but his sister Kimi is a junior like I am, so this gave them a reason to attend. To start off Friday evening, his grandparents, who are UP alum and actually met here decades ago, joined us for dinner at a Thai restaurant just a few minutes from campus. I had two midterms earlier Friday morning, so I really appreciated being treated to one of my favorite types of food!

I always enjoy hearing his grandparents' stories about how UP used to be, how some elements have changed through the years, while others remain timeless no matter what year it may be. They demonstrate such devoted pilot pride that sometimes I think they attend more campus events than I do!

After dinner, we headed to the social hosted by our University at our main dining hall. There were appetizers and drinks, as well as the presence of many school faculty, priests, and other forms of administrative staff. It was a great opportunity to meet the families of some of my friends, and I think the families equally enjoyed meeting the friends of their sons and daughters.

On Sunday, I joined my boyfriend's family for mass in the Chapel where the majority of the priests attended. Having had some of these priests for professors and getting to know them in the classroom, I always enjoy seeing them around campus. After mass, Chris and I treated his family to brunch in the Commons with our meal points. After the fun was over, we watched some episodes of our favorite tv show and some Mario Kart since we are always so busy during the week without time to relax like this. I have a few more midterms to battle...so until next week...take care! And as always, feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

Why I Chose UP: I liked that my class sizes would consist of around 23 students, because this way the professor would know my name on a more personal level. The students and staff were more than welcoming when I came for a tour, and if you have a chance to visit campus, I assure you'll feel the same way.

Favorite Thing About UP:  Definitely the resources available to students. We have a career center to help everyone develop professionally, a learning center that provides tutoring, and a service center for those who want to volunteer.

Advice for Prospective Students: I recommend trying to study abroad. It is very possible to do this and still graduate in four years. There are a variety of countries to choose from, all of which will give you a new perspective of yourself and the world.
