In the Presence of Autumn

As time progresses in the semester, fall is finally starting to be seen on campus. The leaves are turning bright yellows, oranges, and reds. They accumulate on the floor and the colors couldn’t be any more vibrant. Campus in the fall is just about one of the most beautiful things you’ll ever see. At this time in the middle of the semester so many things are going on. Classes are more challenging than ever, more things are due, and the more things are being learned, which means that the more we’re all being prepared for our career lives.

Coming back from fall break and getting right to work seems to be a challenge for many of us. We go from sometimes doing nothing to going back to our hectic schedules. I spent my first part of the week focusing on a physics exam that I was to take on Friday and doing my Spanish reading for my class as well as getting my statics homework done that I successfully turned in on Wednesday. Once in college you learn how to manage time like no other, it’s such a great skill to have. Just remember, the successful people knew about time management. This is something that I’ve personally struggled with a lot and it so happens that UP has a resource center where you can get help just for that. My freshman year I met with Br. Thomas a couple times and let me tell you, it worked!

One of the highlights of this week was Judson Laipply’s visit to UP on Thursday. For those of you that don’t know who he is, he’s the one that started the evolution dance. If you don’t know what I’m talking about then you should probably look it up on YouTube or something. Going to his talk was quite exciting. He was so funny and he made everyone laugh at his comedy talk, which also talked about life. His talk was very inspirational in the way that he says that people should enjoy their life no matter how hard of a time they may be having because no matter what someone else somewhere is having it worse than you are. It’s great that UP is always able to bring in people from all over to speak to us about different topics and they do it in such a creative way.

The upcoming week is an exciting week with so much going on. I can hardly wait.

Why I Chose UP: The campus was amazing and the community at this school was exactly what I wanted. I liked that my classes would be very small and I would be getting the right academic attention. I believe strongly in the mission of the school and I felt at home when I made my decision.

Favorite Thing About UP:  Close enough to home that I can go for a weekend, come back and not be totally exhausted. There are so many things to do in Portland and I like that we have a lot of studies abroad opportunities.

Advice for Prospective Students: Visit the school; you don't know what you're getting yourself into until you truly experience it.
