Fall Break in Seattle

For Fall break I ended up going home to Seattle. I spent the entire week there and believe it or not, I was able to get a lot done.

First of all, let me tell you a little bit about Fall break. UP doesn’t give us three day weekends during the national holidays (i.e. Veteran’s Day). So what happens is that all of these days throughout the year are brought together and are thus, we’re given a whole week off at one time in the fall. Some people may have mixed feelings about it. As for me, I love it! I get a whole week off to go home and to take a break from all of the studying. Trust me; it’s a good feeling to sleep in every now and then. This is also a good opportunity for those students that have jobs back home to go home and work for the week and make some cash. Students are more than welcome to stay on campus during the week, which is a great opportunity to explore Portland and get to know the city better. However, many do end up going home.

I was able to get pretty much all of my homework done during the week off. The best thing about being home was that I was able to see my family and spend time with them. Both of my parents have birthdays in October, so being home for a whole week was a great gift for them. We ended up going to dinner twice while I was over. Being home was such a relieve, our break falls right in the perfect time during the semester and when I feel I’m in need of it most. It’s always good to go back and take a break from the school environment.

I got back to campus on Sunday in the evening and let me tell you, getting from home to campus for me is not difficult at all. I feel that each time I drive to and from is faster because I’m so used to the drive.

Why I Chose UP: The campus was amazing and the community at this school was exactly what I wanted. I liked that my classes would be very small and I would be getting the right academic attention. I believe strongly in the mission of the school and I felt at home when I made my decision.

Favorite Thing About UP:  Close enough to home that I can go for a weekend, come back and not be totally exhausted. There are so many things to do in Portland and I like that we have a lot of studies abroad opportunities.

Advice for Prospective Students: Visit the school; you don't know what you're getting yourself into until you truly experience it.
