Big Bang on Campus

What a week! So much going on and so much excitement. There was so much to do this week, yet so little time and finding the time to fit all that I wanted to do was tough. I had to study for a statics exam, get a lot of assignments done, write a paper, and go to awesome events!

My highlight of the week however, was meeting Kunal Nayyar, one of the cast members from the Big Bang Theory. It so happens that Kunal graduated from UP in 2003 with a business degree and somehow ended up in acting. He was at UP on Thursday to talk about his achievements and how being at UP helped him get to where he is, such an inspirational story. Best part of the talk was that the man is hilarious, we all laughed a lot and it was a great study break. At the end of the talk he invited us to go talk to him and take pictures and get his autograph. Sadly for me, I had left my camera in my dorm, phone was dead, so no picture of that, sad story.

Veteran’s Day was on Friday and as many people know, that’s not a day that we get off from school. However, I was able to make it to the Memorial Ceremony that we had on campus for a little bit between classes. It’s awesome that we get to remember and honor all of those that have passed defending our country.

My dorm hosted an event on Friday night so that we could go in and watch Harry Potter movies, well the last two that is 7.1 and 7.2. So I have to admit, I’m not much of a Harry Potter fan, I had only seen 3 of the movies prior to these so I was really confused. My friend and I went together and when we got there we were put into separate “houses” like in the movies, we both ended up in Slytherin… whatever that means. We then had a dinner banquet, filled out a trivia sheet (that I didn’t really even fill out), and began watching 7.1. Though, not a big fan, I really liked it. After the movie was over, we had a snack break (chocolate frogs included) before we began 7.2. Long night, but totally worth going to because we had so much fun and it was the first time that the residence hall had ever hosted something like that.

Why I Chose UP: The campus was amazing and the community at this school was exactly what I wanted. I liked that my classes would be very small and I would be getting the right academic attention. I believe strongly in the mission of the school and I felt at home when I made my decision.

Favorite Thing About UP:  Close enough to home that I can go for a weekend, come back and not be totally exhausted. There are so many things to do in Portland and I like that we have a lot of studies abroad opportunities.

Advice for Prospective Students: Visit the school; you don't know what you're getting yourself into until you truly experience it.
